At Chatham Habitat, we realize that a home is more than a house - it is also the community that surrounds it.

Thus, we help build neighborhoods where families can thrive and become active participants in their communities. We nurture this by offering classes in Conflict Resolution and Communication, by working with our partner families to create neighborhood associations, and by providing on-going support through a staff person trained in community development.

Arrowpoint

Six families, half of them Habitat partners, make up this cozy community of single-family homes in Bear Creek. The Habitat homes were constructed in 2003 and 2004. Chatham Habitat's first Homeowners Association was created here, as was our first FaithWorks house and our first house using fiber cement board siding.

East Cornwallis

Chatham Habitat began building in this existing neighborhood in south Pittsboro in 1999 and has since added 23 homes. Within walking distance of downtown and local schools, the culturally diverse community features a playground and a Community House that hosts afterschool tutoring for children. Special projects have included an Apostles Build homes, a home sponsored by Fearrington Village, and a passive-solar home designed by award-winning N.C. State University students. Two Homeowners Associations actively work to improve the neighborhood and to foster healthy relationships among neighbors.

Chatham Oak

(part of the East Cornwallis sub-division). Chatham Habitat is developing this innovative mixed-income community in Pittsboro on five acres of land donated by Chatham County for affordable housing. Eight homes are being constructed by Chatham Habitat in partnership with families earning 25% to 50% of area median income (approximately $18,000-$36,000 for a family of four). The remaining seven houses will be constructed by a professional builder who will sell to homebuyers earning no more than 80% of median income (approximately $36,000-$48,000 for a family of four). The sale price of the homes will be $160,000, with low-interest loans available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Westmont

Houses are still going up in this community of single-family homes in western Siler City. The first Habitat house was completed in 2004 and approximately 30 homes have been added since then. Special projects have included seven Home Builders Blitz houses, two Apostles Build houses, a FaithWorks house, an HBA-DOC sponsored house, and a Building on Faith house. An active Homeowners Association has added special features including extra street lights, a bicycle path, monthly neighborhood clean-ups, and more. A National Night Out celebration in 2009 attracted a crowd of 200 people.
