Repurpose with Purpose

This week we want to spotlight one of our many long time volunteers, Megan:

Megan recalls home being “a safe place to spend your time with family. It's a place where you know your neighbors and they know you.” She shares some of her story as she continues to organize the books and put new books on the shelves. She says that at home, “everyone aids each other.”

Growing up she was inspired to follow her interests and get involved by her senior Girl Scout leader. Although her leader didn’t look like the outdoorsy type because, “she wore dresses to our meetings,” her leader would take the group camping and introduce them to the outdoors. Megan had an exciting career path as only the second woman in the state of North Carolina hired as a park Ranger in 1977! She shares how she had to prove herself in that career path and even wear men’s uniforms for many years as they had not made women’s uniforms yet.

All her life, Megan and her mom shopped at thrift stores. “We were always at a thrift store,” she says. “Going to thrift stores and finding and repurposing items has always been a part of my life. I am a big believer in recycling.” The ReStores provide a way to keep gently used items out of a landfill and to be repurposed into a new home. You never know what you might find!

"One small change can make such a big difference for many folks."

Today, Megan shares her passion and interests with the ReStore by volunteering in the mornings a couple of days a week. “One small change can make such a big difference for many folks. Be it a smile, words of encouragement or physical assistance.” She works hard pricing donated items, stocking shelves with new items, and engaging with customers. To date she has volunteered over 650 hours!

We couldn’t continue to build safe, decent, and affordable homes without the generous support and dedication of our volunteers like Megan. Our ReStores are vital to what we do

and ensure that we can continue to build homes

while also keeping items out of the landfill!
